Outdoor enclosures are designed to keep equipment safe and dry no matter what the conditions. Most enclosures come with an IP rating which tells you roughly what conditions they are designed for.

Typical B&R enclosures IP ratings are: –

IP42 – Commonly referred to as ‘weatherproof’. This rating actually means that a probe of 1mm diameter cannot enter the enclosure and it is protected against vertically falling drops. Typically this rating refers to meter boxes and domestic outdoor enclosures.
IP55 – Allows the limited ingress of dust (no harmful deposit) and protection against jets of water. Typically this rating is an industrial or wet area enclosure.
IP65 – Total protection from the ingress of dust and protected against jets of water. Typically this is an industrial outdoor enclosure.
IP66 – Total protection from the ingress of dust and protected against strong jets of water. Typically this is an industrial outdoor enclosure for use on a plant.
